-1 antitrypsin synthesized in liver  blood

Acts as  proteolytic inhibitor of trypsin,chymotrypsin, elastase, plasmin, thrombin,proteases

Neutralizes circulating proteolytic enzymes

With deficiency of -1 antitrypsin, PMNs andalveolar macrophages sequester in lungs andrelease elastase which digests basementmembrane

Bullae at both lung bases

Basilar predominance

Marked flattening of the diaphragm

Redistribution of blood to upper lungzones

Associated with cirrhosis in homozygousindividuals
