Nightstick Fracture

  • Direct trauma to the forearm which is used to block the blow, such as from a nightstick where forearm is used to protect face
  • Stable fracture if displaced less than 50%; unstable if displaced more than 50%
  • Non-operative treatment if in distal 1/3 of forearm with little angulation
  • Non-union in small percentage of cases (<5%), early immobilization decreasing chance
