William Herring, MD, was, until recently, the Vice-Chair of the Department of Radiology for 20 years and the Radiology Residency Program Director at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for even longer. LearningRadiology™ is the website he developed and began posting to in 2002 and it has been in continuous operation since that time. Since its inception, the entire site has been maintained and managed and its content produced in its entirety by Dr. Herring.
Dr. Herring has served as President of the Philadelphia Roentgen Ray Society and President of the Alliance for Medical Student Educators in Radiology (AMSER). He has received the Outstanding Educator Award of the Philadelphia Roentgen Ray Society, the Outstanding Achievement Award of the Association of Program Directors in Radiology (APDR) and the Excellence in Education Award of the Alliance for Medical Student Educators in Radiology. He was also the honoree of the Pennsylvania Radiological Society in 2017. He is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The site was originally intended to replace the paper handout notes that
accompanied lectures for the residents and medical students at Einstein Medical Center. It now contains over 5,000 pages of content, and has grown in
popularity so that currently almost ten thousand unique visitors access the site every single day. Visitors access over 23 million pages of content every year.
The website has been, and continues to be, free to use. It requires no registration, no sign-in and no fee.
Learning Radiology: Recognizing the Basics
In 2007, a greatly expanded and image-rich fundamental textbook of radiology written by Dr. Herring was published by Elsevier/Mosby. The best-selling text was published in a 3rd Edition in May, 2015 in both print and electronic formats with additional coverage of pediatric radiology. The text, called Learning Radiology: Recognizing the Basics uses the same fundamental approach to teaching as does this site, but contains key information on other modalities, additional material not covered on the website and access to StudentConsult.com with 75 interactive tutorials based on the book, including 240 imaged-based cases related to material in the text.
LearningRadiology Video Podcasts on iTunes
In the summer of 2008, LearningRadiology.com™ began to publish video podcasts made available from the iTunes Store. Thousands of LearningRadiology.com™ Video Podcasts have been downloaded. Video podcasts are kept short, contain material not found in the textbook and are designed specifically for the small screen. They are also avaiable on YouTube.
LearningRadiology on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
LearningRadiology.com™ has over 800,000 followers on social media. It posts unknown cases on a daily basis to Facebook where it is followed by almost 750,000, on a Twitter feed at @RadSigns to over 18 thousand followers and on Instagram at #learningradiology by over 60 thousand followers. The Case of the Week, now in its 600+ consecutive-week rendition, is also posted to these three solcial media sites.
There are hundreds of thousands of links to material on this site from Google alone including hundreds of university programs in radiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians and radiologic technologist programs.
